She laughed. “Nah, I agree. Most of us suck. If I could, I would just live here in the woods. I would avoid all humans.” She paused and thought about the friends she was beginning to make. “Actually, maybe not all. There are exceptions.”
She sighed and allowed her eyes to slide shut. “It’s just more interesting in the woods. I know how things work here! Plus, this is where most of my citizens live anyway.”
“Why can’t you live here… Other than being human and having to…” She made a strange, almost disgusted face. “Eat and drink water to live and everything?”
Pine stretched out her legs like a cat waking up, but still stayed seated. “What’s stopping you?” She had actually been curious for once, thinking to herself, humans are so strange, but so… enticing.
“Ummm, I’m pretty sure. My mom and dad aren’t special or anything. They’re just humans so unless I’m adopted I’m just a human.” She didn’t think she was adopted. Gav looked too much like her family to be anything but blood. Besides most of the creatures in the forest spoke english. It’s not like they were speaking a different language altogether…right?
“Right… It was foolish of me to think such a strange thing. Not to mention… Well, it’s not like any of us would be meddling with humans still after all the bad that has happened due to them…” Pine realized what she had said could strike a nerve. “N-Not that you’re like them! I apologize, Gavina!”
She offered a small smile, “Here’s the thing– if we can find a stream, it’ll be bound to lead us somewhere familiar. So keep your eyes and ears open for any sign of running water, alright? In the meantime, we’ll just be walking, so… do you mind introducing yourself?
“Phoebe Dryope is my name, but I’m usually referred to as Pine.” The girl stated matter-of-factly. “I am a dryad, or tree nymph… I felt light-headed and walked closer to a lake and got lost…” She sighed.
She thought for a moment. “Most of ‘em, yea. The rest just kinda roar and growl. Though, I don’t need to understand them to know they’re probably telling me to leave ‘em alone.” She chuckled. “Why d’ya ask?”
The girl shared a nervous chuckle at the other’s words. “Uh, I can communicate with some of them… Are you sure you’re… Human?” Pine’s green eyes shone with a glint of hope and excitement as she questioned Gav.
There’s always been that myth… Or prophecy, whatever they said… But it was frowned upon originally.
“Well most of the townspeople just stay outta the woods, so I’m usually the only one that goes in this far anyway. And I know where most of the mean ones live so I just avoid ‘em.” Gav placed her hands behind her head.
“Most of ‘em aren’t that bad though, they just look that way.”
“Can you… Communicate with them..?” Pine didn’t want to meddle, she really didn’t. She had met a kind human, a child at that, but she needed to know if her ‘Queen’ was ever in any huge danger, or could be at that.

Gwen’s eyebrows shot up at that. She lived here? Surely she was kidding. The look on the girl’s face, though… Well, it said otherwise. She looked shaken. That is to say, Pine looked completely serious. After examining Pine’s expression a little while longer, Gwen decided to shrug it off. She’d seen way weirder in Gravity Falls. A chick living in the woods wasn’t that far of a stretch.
“O…kay. Well, anyway, I’m Gwen. I’m a ranger here, so you should be fine with me.”
The small girl grinned to herself in solitude. I knew she was of some importance!
“Oh, thank you so much! You must surely know your way around here!” Pine announced excitedly, hopeful of a way out of a situation like this as she continued to scout the area for any animals she could possibly speak with.
